Some cases stand out. Some lawyers do, too.
Just ask anyone who has witnessed the work of Matthew Rundio, a personal injury attorney with Chicago's Lloyd & Cavanagh.
Rundio has earned numerous winning verdicts and favorable settlements for his clients. One of the most noteworthy centered on a high-speed police chase that resulted in the death of a woman. Rundio represented the family of a woman who was killed when a vehicle involved in the chase crossed the centerline of the road and collided with her vehicle. The case was challenging because both the fleeing driver and a municipality were defendants, and the municipality claimed that all fault lied with the fleeing driver.
Rundio displayed his legal talents fully in this case. He conducted a thorough investigation and located witnesses whose names were not contained on the police report. These witnesses contradicted the testimony of the defendants. Rundio also retained experts in the fields of vehicle dynamics and metallurgy who performed an analysis of the forensic evidence. This analysis led to scientific conclusions that also contradicted the testimony of certain witnesses.
Members of the jury were obviously impressed. They found all of the defendants negligent. The municipal defendant was jointly and severally liable for the entire $2 million jury verdict.
This is just one example of Rundio's legal abilities.
"Matt is a hard-working, intelligent, dedicated attorney who represents his clients to the best of his skill and ability." said Thomas M. Tully, with Chicago's Thomas M. Tully & Associates. "In and out of the courtroom, Matt is a consummate professional who treats his opponents with courtesy and respect."
During his short career, Rundio has already earned several multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients. These clients have suffered injuries as a result of railroad, trucking, automobile, medical, and nursing home negligence. Rundio has also handled numerous product liability cases including one that resulted in a $3 million settlement.
Rundio recently prosecuted a railroad grade crossing case against two railroads in federal court on behalf of an Illinois man whose wife and daughter were killed. The case presented a challenge because the only witness to the collision was the train's engineer. Through expert testimony, Rundio and his co-counsel were able to present a viable case that the crossing was extraordinarily hazardous. The case settled for $1.5 million.
In another memorable case, Rundio served as an integral member of the trial team that earned a $22 million jury verdict for an elderly couple who were passengers in a vehicle that was hit by a train at a grade crossing.
Perhaps the greatest proof of Rundio's skill comes from the praise he receives from his opponents. Ann Collins-Dole, chief assistant corporation counsel for the City of Chicago, is one of these opponents. She has nothing but praise for Rundio's work.
"His trial strategy was very effective, his ability to depose witnesses and capitalize on what he learned at trial was very effective," Collins-Dole said. "And this was when he was a very new attorney. Matt is an all-around good lawyer, always a zealous advocate, and always a perfect gentleman and a man of his word."
Matt is married to Kelly Sullivan Rundio, an attorney at the Chicago law firm of Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP. The Rundios recently celebrated the birth of their first child, a beautiful daughter.
