Kurt
D. Lloyd is a founder and partner of Lloyd & Cavanagh
in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Lloyd focuses his practice in
plaintiff's personal injury trial work and handles automobile
negligence, medical malpractice and product liability cases
involving catastrophic injury and wrongful death.
In
2005, Mr. Lloyd and his partner obtained a 7.5 million dollar
settlement after two weeks of trial for a woman left brain
damaged. Mr. Lloyd argued that when emergency room personnel
failed to perform a timely EKG for complaints of chest pain
leading to cardiac arrest one hour after her admission to
the hospital.
During
his career, Mr. Lloyd has consistently obtained jury verdicts
and settlements for victims of negligence. Notably, in 1995,
Mr. Lloyd won a 9.7 million dollar jury verdict against
a HMO gatekeeper physician for obstetrical negligence, the
first Illinois case to hold a physician liable under a managed
care insurance system. In 1996, Mr. Lloyd reached an 8.0
million dollar settlement, a record high at the time, on
behalf of three minor children as a result of the wrongful
death of their mother while a patient at University of Chicago
Hospitals. Other more recent notable cases include: 4.35
million dollar settlement from a construction company for
a bicyclist who was struck and injured in a temporary crosswalk;
6.0 million settlement against a suburban obstetrical group
failure to properly monitor and test a pregnant mother for
amniotic fluid complications resulting in brain damage to
her child; 1.4 million dollar settlement against a commercial
building owner for a office worker who slipped and fell
on ice in a doorway while leaving the building; 4.2 million
dollar settlement against an urgent care center for failure
suspect an aneurysm in a forty-two year old woman complaining
of a severe headache and resulting in a stroke; and 1.1
million dollar settlement from an underinsured motorist
carrier on behalf of the parents of a fourteen year old
teenage girl killed in a one car accident.
In
July, 2004 Mr. Lloyd received the Citation of Excellence
Medal from the American Association of Trial Lawyers. Mr.
Lloyd is an invited member of the American Board of Trial
Lawyers for his extensive experience in plaintiff's personal
injury jury trials. He frequently is asked to lecture to
trial attorneys on discovery and trial techniques. He is
also the author of "Closing Argument" in the Medical
Negligence Trial Notebook. Mr.
Lloyd recently became an invited member of the American
Board of Trial Advocates, a preeminent national trial bar.
He is also a long standing member of the Illinois Trial
Lawyers Association.
