On
March 2nd, a lawsuit was filed against RON ARTEST and DAN
ARTEST in the Circuit Court of Cook County for injuries
sustained by SUSAN ROMANCHEK and her sons, GREGORY and DEAN
in a Feb. 19th automobile collision in Deerfield, IL. On
February 19, 2001, DANIEL ARTEST, the brother of RON ARTEST,
was driving a vehicle, owned or leased by the Chicago Bulls
player, out of the Deerfield High School Parking Lot onto
Waukegan Road. ARTEST lost control of his vehicle and struck
several automobiles including the vehicle driven by ROMANCHEK.
The
two-count lawsuit alleges that RON ARTEST knew his brother
did not have a valid Illinois driver's license and yet allowed
and encouraged his brother to drive the vehicle. The lawsuit
also alleges that DANIEL ARTEST was negligent when he lost
control of the Mitsubishi Montero.
SUSAN
ROMANCHEK, age 40, was taken by a Village of Deerfield Ambulance
crew to Highland Park Hospital. She is currently under the
care of several doctors. Her condition is stable.
The
attorney for the ROMANCHEK family, TIMOTHY J. CAVANAGH of
LLOYD & CAVANAGH, stated:
It
is hard to imagine why Ron Artest would allow his brother
to drive his car knowing that he did not have a valid
driver's license. This lawsuit will seek to hold those
accountable for the ROMANCHEKS' injuries and medical bills.
The
case is entitled SUSAN ROMANCHEK, Individually and as Mother
of GREGORY and DEAN ROMANCHEK v. RON ARTEST and DANIEL ARTEST,
Court No. 01 L 2584. The Case is pending before Judge David
Donnersberger in the Circuit Court of Cook County.
In
September, 2000, Mr. Cavanagh won a $9.1 million settlement
in a railroad crossing collision case entitled Hanifa Ajmeri
v. Illinois Central Railroad Company, No. 98 L 3517. He
also represents the Velarde family as a result of a train
car crash on January 9, 2001 in Bloomingdale, Illinois that
has been the subject of intense media interest. The case
is entitled Fidel Velarde, et. al. v. Illinois Central Railroad
Company, No. 01 L 373. Mr. Cavanagh also represents the
Taylor family as a result of their mother's death in the
Salvation Army Van Crash in Joliet earlier this year. The
case is entitled Michael Taylor, Special Administrator of
the Estate of Jill Henry v. The Salvation Army, No. 01 L
1747.
