LLOYD
& CAVANAGH OBTAINS $20,000,000.00 JUDGMENT AGAINST MURDERER
OF ESTRANGED WIFE
On
Thursday, May 11, 2000, Judge Maureen Durkin Roy entered
a twenty million dollar ($20,000,000.00) civil judgment
against Cruz Roman. Roman was sued by the Estate of Miriam
Roman after Cruz Roman plead guilty to the murder of his
estranged wife, Miriam Roman, age 40. The case is Alexander
Wohn, Special Administrator of the Estate of Miriam Roman
v. Cruz Roman, No. 98 L 02525.
The
case arose from the occurrence on February 25, 1998 when
Cruz Roman approached the car driven by Miriam Roman that
was parked in front of St. Mark's Church at 1050 N. Campbell
St., Chicago, Illinois. Miriam was picking up one of her
four minor children at the time. Roman opened fire killing
Miriam with ten bullets as her four young children, ages
12, 11, 8 and 1, watched in horror. Roman fled the scene.
Roman
later pleaded guilty to First Degree Murder and was sentenced
to life in prison. He is currently serving his sentence
at the Menard Correctional Center in downstate Illinois.
The
family's attorney, Timothy J. Cavanagh of Lloyd & Cavanagh
stated:
The
family is relieved that the case has been resolved and
that the Court recognized the wonderful relationship between
Miriam and her four children by awarding $20,000,000.
While the judgment will likely never be satisfied by Cruz
Roman, the verdict was appropriate and just.
The
four children currently live with their aunt and uncle who
adopted them following this tragedy.
